Although it is late in the evening, the city pillar shrine is still bustling with people paying their respects. The Udon Thani City Pillar Shrine was first built in 1959 and houses the spirit of Prince Prajaksinlapat, the founder of Udon Thani, who established the city in 1893.
The main pillar of the city was made of a 5-meter-long "Khoon" wood and buried 3 meters deep. A large number of amulets, rings, silver, and gold were placed under the base for good luck. Later, in 1999, a new city pillar shrine was built to replace the old one, which had deteriorated.
The main building of the city pillar shrine is a blend of Thai and Isan architectural styles, making it a place of worship for the people of Udon Thani. The shrine also features a statue of Thao Wessuwan, one of the four guardians of the world, and a new city pillar shrine. Therefore, it can be said that by paying respects at the Udon Thani city pillar shrine, one can worship and pray to all three sacred objects at once.
