We departed from Baan Nam Resort in the late afternoon and, with some time to spare, decided to make one more stop before heading home.
The Sacred Heart Church: A Gothic Gem in Thailand
The Sacred Heart Church, also known as Wat Phleng or the 100-Year Church, stands as a testament to Western Gothic architecture in Thailand. Its stunning stained glass windows, a hallmark of the style, adorn the interior, creating a vibrant and ethereal atmosphere. Notably, the space behind the altar remains unpainted, a departure from the traditional practice of mural decoration.
Structurally, the church exemplifies the "Wall Bearing" system, where weight is transferred to wooden pile foundations. The walls themselves are constructed from brick and plaster. Recent renovations, undertaken in April-May 2013, have ensured the continued preservation of this architectural gem.
Unfortunately, the church was closed to the public on the day of our visit, so we could only admire its exterior, which was no less beautiful than any other. Wat Pleng, originally named "Ban Pleng," derives its name from the legend of "Phor Maepleng," which represents the joyful and festive lifestyle of the local villagers. Surrounded by nature, rivers, canals, and the lush gardens and fields of the Wat Phra Krisda Hartai community, Wat Pleng serves as the spiritual center for all the Christian villagers of Ban Pleng.
Father Pan, the former abbot of Wat Bang Kluai in Bang Khonthi District, Samut Songkhram Province, laid the foundation for the Christian community at Ban Phleng. In 1850, Father Antonio Labardelle, a missionary priest and abbot of Wat Bang Nok Khwaek, met Father Pan and became interested in learning Christian teachings.
After studying the teachings for about 2-3 years, he requested to become a Christian in 1864 at the age of 67, taking the name "Paul". Later, Mr. Paul Pan returned to live with his relatives in Ban Pling, where the Christian community originated and grew from Mr. Paul Pan's relatives. We regretfully strolled around the exterior and balcony of the church. When the time came, we headed home, concluding our trip to "Bang Khun Thian... in Amphawa" beautifully.
Thank you for watching.
