A Culinary Adventure at the 100-Year-Old Rahaeng Market in Pathum Thani

This review offers a brief glimpse into the culinary delights of the Rahaeng Market, a century-old gem in Pathum Thani province.

Navigating the Market:

While Google Maps can be a helpful tool, it's crucial to note that setting "แปโภชนา" as your destination might lead you astray. This eatery is nestled within the market, and the surrounding area is a residential community. To avoid getting lost in the labyrinthine alleys, consider searching for "สำนักงานสาธารณสุขอำเภอลาดหลุมแก้ว" on Google Maps instead.

This culinary haven offers a tantalizing array of dishes, each bursting with flavor and tradition.

A Culinary Legacy: 'Ruan Ded Menu Thong'

Nestled within the bustling Raheng Market, 'Ruan Ded Menu Thong' stands as a testament to culinary heritage, boasting over 80 years of serving delectable dishes. Having eagerly anticipated our visit, we arrived with hearts set on savoring the restaurant's renowned offerings.

Among the highly recommended dishes are the sun-dried snakehead fish, stir-fried catfish with chili paste, marinated pork, stir-fried minced pork with preserved mustard greens, and snakehead fish tom yum. The sheer abundance of tempting options left us spoilt for choice. Determined to make the most of our experience, despite being only two diners, we skipped breakfast in anticipation of this culinary feast.

The spacious restaurant offers seating areas inside, by the river, and even next to the building. Sprinklers on the roof provide a refreshing mist, creating a constant rain-like atmosphere.

The menu is not very extensive, but everything looks worth trying. It is organized into categories and prices are clearly indicated.

We ordered five dishes: Tom Yum Mixed Seafood, Sun-dried Snakehead Fish, Moo Sa-rong or Moo Jor, Stir-fried Minced Pork with Pickled Mustard Greens, and Stir-fried Spicy Catfish with Herbs.

Sun-dried snakehead fish I usually don't like freshwater fish, but this dish is very appetizing just by looking at the picture. It has a crispy exterior and a slightly salty taste without any fishy smell.

Sweet and savory minced pork rolls (moo satang or moo jor) with a crunchy texture from the water chestnuts and a fragrant ginger aroma. They were incredibly crispy, even after being wrapped up and brought home.

This stir-fried pork belly with pickled mustard greens dish has a unique flavor profile. It is a combination of sour, salty, and slightly sweet. The pork belly is not gamey, tough, or chewy, and the pickled mustard greens add a refreshing tang.

Stir-fried Spicy Catfish with Holy Basil features firm and slightly chewy catfish meat, a distinct aroma of holy basil, and a bold, spicy flavor.

Tom Yum Assorted Seafood is a clear Tom Yum soup with a spicy and sour taste. It comes with 5 large prawns, squid, fish, fish balls, and mushrooms. It's definitely worth the price.

The total cost of this meal was 900 baht, including rice, drinking water, chrysanthemum tea, and a bucket of ice. The amount of food and the price were good value for money. Everything was delicious. Both of us are big eaters, and I can tell you that we were stuffed after this meal. Some of the food was even leftover, and we asked to take it home because we enjoyed it so much. We went on a Saturday around 1 pm, and the food arrived quickly. The staff recommended good dishes, and the service was fast. However, it was a bit hot.

Rahaeng 100 Years Market

After lunch, let's take a walk to digest in the market.

The Rahaeng Market is a century-old wooden market located on both sides of a canal, connected by a wooden bridge. It is situated in Rahaeng Subdistrict, Lad Lum Kaew District, Pathum Thani Province. In the past, this market was the first private railway station on the Talat Phlu - Bang Kruai - Bang Bua Thong - Ban Rahaeng line. Later, when transportation became more convenient and a road was built in front of the Lad Lum Kaew District Office, people switched to using cars, and the railway was discontinued, leaving only the market.

Besides the Raan Pae Phochana restaurant, this market also houses noodle shops, dessert shops, cake shops, barbershops, pharmacies, grocery stores, and fishing equipment shops in a traditional style. There is also a shrine and a museum of old artifacts. It has also served as a filming location for many movies and TV dramas.

Seeking a novel photographic location, a relaxing retreat near the capital, or a change of scenery for your dining experience? We invite you to explore this market, where the atmosphere is a captivating blend of the old and the new. While it may not boast the extensive offerings or bustling energy of other markets, it offers a glimpse into a bygone era, showcasing vintage wares and evoking nostalgic memories. We encourage you to visit and immerse yourself in its unique charm.
