The southern provinces of Thailand are captivating, offering a diverse landscape of beaches, mountains, and delicious cuisine. Surat Thani, one of these provinces, is a popular tourist destination. While a previous work trip provided a glimpse of the area, a recent visit allowed for a more comprehensive exploration. The itinerary included a trip to Koh Samui, a nearby island renowned for its beauty. An initial plan to visit the Cheow Lan Dam floating bungalows was unfortunately cut short due to time constraints, resulting in a trip focused on Koh Samui and Surat Thani. The four-day, three-night journey involved a two-night stay on Koh Samui followed by a one-night stay in Surat Thani.

This trip will be by plane. We will take an early morning flight to Surat Thani Airport. From there, we will take a Panthip Travel bus to Donsak Pier or Seatran Ferry Pier. (Panthip Travel has a ticket booth at the airport and you can book tickets in advance through their website. They also offer combined bus and ferry tickets, which is very convenient.) The bus ride from the airport to the pier takes approximately 1.30 hours.

Once ready, we boarded the ferry, a large vessel capable of transporting vehicles across the island. The ferry ride to Koh Samui takes approximately one hour and fifteen minutes.

Upon arriving at Koh Samui, we opted to rent a motorbike for approximately 250-350 baht per day. Conveniently located near the ferry terminal, we immediately set off on our motorbike adventure.

Our first stop was The Nature Samui, a hidden gem of a restaurant and café. The atmosphere was unlike anything we had experienced on the island.

A Bite of Tradition: Exploring the Flavors of Mieng Kam

Mieng kam, a beloved Thai appetizer, is a delightful explosion of textures and flavors. This intricate dish, often served on a betel leaf, combines a variety of ingredients, including roasted coconut, ginger, lime, chilies, peanuts, and dried shrimp. Each element contributes its unique character, creating a harmonious balance of sweet, sour, salty, and spicy notes.

The preparation of mieng kam is an art form in itself. The betel leaf, a mild stimulant with a slightly peppery taste, serves as the base for this culinary masterpiece. Each ingredient is carefully chosen and prepared, ensuring a perfect balance of flavors. The roasted coconut adds a touch of sweetness and crunch, while the ginger and lime provide a refreshing zest. The chilies offer a fiery kick, while the peanuts and dried shrimp contribute a savory richness.

The menu's visual appeal is undeniable, with every dish looking incredibly tempting. Moreover, the taste is truly exceptional. If you're visiting Koh Samui, this restaurant is highly recommended.

The beverage menu offers a wide variety of options, including desserts.

For accommodation, we stayed at the Wild Cottages Elephant Sanctuary Resort, a recently opened resort offering villa-style rooms with a fantastic atmosphere.

On the second day, we purchased a day trip to Ang Thong National Marine Park. The trip included a visit to the Pha Jun Jaras Viewpoint and the Talay Nai Lagoon. The weather was not ideal, with light rain falling throughout the day.

For the tour, we purchased it through the TNS Holiday page, but it was operated by Highsea Tour Koh Samui. We booked the non-kayaking option, which cost 850 baht per person.

The First Stop: Koh Wua Talap

The first stop on our journey was Koh Wua Talap, an island within the Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park. The highlight of this island is the hike to the Pha Chan Jaras viewpoint, offering stunning panoramic views. The 500-meter trail is quite steep, so be sure to bring plenty of water.

As you ascend, the breathtaking vista gradually unfolds before you.

The first viewpoint we encountered offered a stunning vista.

Finally, we arrived and the view was truly breathtaking.

The sight of numerous small islands scattered across the vast expanse of water was truly breathtaking.

Photographers should take advantage of the opportunity to capture numerous images. Early arrival to the summit allows for unobstructed views with minimal crowds. It is recommended to ascend promptly upon arrival to secure the best vantage points.

Looking down, we saw our ship anchored in the sea below.

After taking numerous photos, we descended to take more pictures below before boarding the boat to continue our journey.

Lunch was served on board the ship. The buffet-style meal was tasty and offered a variety of options. Passengers were able to refill their plates as needed.

The ship set sail for the island of Mae Ko.

As the boat sailed, passengers were treated to stunning views of the ocean and mountains.

The exact location of this island remains uncertain. A stone archway serves as a prominent landmark.

The Journey to Koh Mae: A Tranquil Oasis

Our journey swiftly brought us to Koh Mae, a captivating island renowned for its serene inner sea. This sheltered lagoon, embraced by verdant mountains, boasts mesmerizing emerald-hued waters.

The island's tranquility invites introspection and a profound connection with nature. The absence of bustling crowds and the gentle lapping of waves against the shore create an atmosphere of profound serenity.

As we ventured deeper into the island's heart, we encountered a tapestry of vibrant flora and fauna. Lush vegetation adorned the landscape, while exotic birdsong filled the air. The island's biodiversity serves as a testament to its pristine environment and the delicate balance of nature.

Koh Mae's allure extends beyond its natural beauty. The island's rich cultural heritage is evident in its ancient temples and traditional villages. The warmth and hospitality of the local people add to the island's charm, creating an unforgettable experience for visitors.

Our exploration of Koh Mae culminated in a profound appreciation for its unique ecosystem and cultural significance. This hidden gem offers a sanctuary for those seeking respite from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

The coastal area also features a nature trail with a steep incline, offering numerous photo opportunities.

The view from the lookout point, facing the open sea, is also beautiful.

For those who are curious about the ascent and descent, this is what it looks like. It's a series of steep stairs, but the distance is much shorter than the hike to the Pha Chan Jaras viewpoint.

On the beachfront of Koh Mae Ko, there is a small beach where you can swim.

The time is approximately 3:30 PM, and it is time to board the boat to return to Koh Samui.

Upon arriving at Koh Samui, we freshened up and changed clothes before enjoying dinner at our accommodation.

On the third day, we woke up early and visited Hin Ta and Hin Yai.

The Eye Stone

The Eye Stone, also known as Hin Ta, is a naturally formed rock formation located on the island of Ko Samui in Thailand. Its distinctive shape resembles a male genital, hence its name, which translates to "grandfather rock" in Thai. The Eye Stone is a popular tourist destination, known for its unique appearance and the legend associated with it.

According to local folklore, the Eye Stone was formed when a giant named Ta Prom was turned to stone by a powerful sorcerer. The sorcerer was angered by Ta Prom's attempts to seduce his daughter, and as punishment, he transformed him into the rock formation we see today. The Eye Stone is said to bring good luck and fertility to those who touch it.

Despite its suggestive appearance, the Eye Stone is a significant landmark in Thai culture and is often visited by locals and tourists alike. It serves as a reminder of the country's rich folklore and the power of nature.

It is unclear whether this is the same stone as the grandmother's stone. There are several similarities, but further investigation is needed to confirm.

The Hin Ta Hin Yai rocks offer a plethora of picturesque photo opportunities.

Next, we stopped at Crystal Beach, a hidden gem on Koh Samui, where the crystal-clear water sparkled.

The beach is safe for swimming.

The seawater is exceptionally clear, especially in the early morning hours when there are few people around.

Our next stop is the Lad Koh Viewpoint.

This area features a pathway that leads down to the seashore, offering a 180-degree panoramic view of the ocean.

The seabed below will be rocky.

The area appears aesthetically pleasing, primarily frequented by individuals engaged in fishing activities rather than tourists.

While Koh Samui offers a plethora of attractions, our limited time necessitated a swift return to our accommodation for check-out.

We then took a boat back to the shore, booking our tickets with Pantip as before, which included both the boat and the car.

Upon arriving in Surat Thani city, we rented a car for transportation.

Upon acquiring a vehicle, we ventured to the Ban Pak Nam Krachae market to indulge in a feast of fresh oysters. This small community market, nestled amidst the mangroves, is conveniently located near the city center.

Oysters are available at numerous stalls. According to the vendors, all oysters originate from the same source, resulting in a consistent flavor profile. However, the accompanying dipping sauces vary significantly between vendors.

Oyster Sizes

The size of oysters can vary greatly depending on the species, growing conditions, and age.

Here are some common oyster sizes:

• Cocktail: These are the smallest oysters, typically measuring less than 3 inches in length. They are often served raw on the half shell.
• Select: These oysters are slightly larger than cocktail oysters, measuring between 3 and 4 inches in length. They can be served raw or cooked.
• Standard: These are the most common size of oyster, measuring between 4 and 5 inches in length. They are versatile and can be served raw, grilled, or fried.

The first restaurant is a great choice for seafood lovers like me.

For dessert, there are fresh, delicious gold rolls.

The menu also features a variety of pickled seafood, including shrimp, mantis shrimp, and crab roe.

On the third night, we stayed at Baan Muji Villa, a small and charming house decorated in a minimalist Japanese Muji style. The accommodation was excellent, with a nightly rate of 950 baht, including breakfast.

The bathroom is equipped with a shower, hairdryer, and separate wet and dry areas.

In the evening, we received a recommendation from the car rental shop staff to visit Pa Ya Hoi Sod, a renowned restaurant in Surat Thani. We eagerly decided to try it out, and were presented with a diverse menu and delectable dishes.

Early in the morning, we checked out of our accommodation and headed to Khao Na Nai Luang Natural Park, a hidden gem in Surat Thani province.

The highlight will be at the Buddhavadi Gate.

The allure of the sunrise: A missed opportunity

While our arrival may have been slightly delayed, preventing us from witnessing the sun's ascent perfectly aligned with the gate's archway, the scene remained breathtaking nonetheless. The interplay of light and architecture created a captivating spectacle, leaving a lasting impression despite the missed celestial alignment.

On the summit of the mountain, there are six pagodas. Visitors can climb to the top to conquer them, but we will fly a drone up there first. We will save the climb for next time.

After taking our fill of photos, it was time to move on.

Our next stop is the suspension bridge at Heart-Shaped Mountain.

From the suspension bridge, we continued our journey to the Ratchaprapha Dam, also known as Cheow Lan Lake. If we had had an extra night, we would have stayed overnight on a floating raft, but this time we decided to just do a quick survey.

The view here is truly breathtaking, even though we visited during the day.

This angle is very pleasing and produces beautiful photographs.

We then embarked on a rafting trip at Khao Sok River Canoe, which took approximately one hour for the round trip, including travel time.

During the raft trip, there will be some shaded areas and some sunny areas. If you are going to raft, it is recommended to go in the morning.

Overall, the atmosphere along the rafting route was pleasant, with beautiful scenery and waterfalls cascading through crevices in the rocks.

After finishing our bamboo rafting adventure, we prepared to visit the final check-in point of our trip.

This is the source of the Nam Rat River, a natural spring with blue-green water that is incredibly clear and cool. This is our second visit; the first time we did not swim, but this time we did.

The fact that we went on a weekday meant that there were fewer people, making it easier to take photos.

The transparency of the watercolor is impressive. The colors are beautiful and inviting, making it an extremely enjoyable medium to work with.

The sentence "มีปลาด้วยนะ" translates to "There are fish too" in English.

The underwater scenery is breathtaking, especially when the sunlight reflects off the water, making it even more beautiful.

The water was so refreshing that we played until we were chilled. The water was very cold, and there were showers available to rinse off after swimming.

This four-day, three-night trip to Koh Samui and Surat Thani may have come to an end, but Surat Thani still has many more tourist attractions to offer. The places we visited were just a fraction of what's available. This trip was truly memorable, even though we encountered some rain (only one day, actually). Overall, every location on this trip was stunning, and we captured countless photos. We hope this review will be helpful for those planning a trip to Surat Thani. For our return trip, we opted for a flight around 8 pm, returning the car at the airport in the late afternoon. This proved to be a very convenient option. For those visiting Surat Thani, I highly recommend renting a car for its ease of use.
