Hello everyone. During the recent Songkran festival, I had the opportunity to travel to Japan. While there, I made it a point to try out several restaurants that were highly recommended for their delicious food. I ended up visiting 4-5 different places, and I'm excited to share my reviews with you all. The first restaurant I'd like to talk about is Unatoto Unagi, a restaurant specializing in unagi (eel) rice bowls. The reason I chose this restaurant to review first is simple: I have a personal love for unagi. Haha.
Unatoto Unagi is a restaurant that specializes in unagi (eel) dishes. If you're not a fan of eel, you can skip this one. The restaurant has several locations and is open late, making it a convenient option for a late-night meal. For more information, please visit the restaurant's website: http://www.unatoto.com/?page_id=90&lang=en
The branch I visited was the Ameyoko Market branch in Ueno, which is one of the most popular shopping destinations for us Thais. The appearance of the restaurant is as shown in the picture.
As for the exact coordinates, I'm not sure how to explain it clearly. Let's just say that the restaurant is located in an alley of Ameyoko Market, where a train track runs through. You can hear the sound of the train while you eat. For those who have Google Maps and internet, just copy and paste "名代 宇奈とと 上野店 ueno" into Google Maps. I guarantee you'll get to the front of the restaurant. My friends and I have already proven it.
This restaurant has a total of 2 floors. The first floor is a bit cramped because it has to share space with the chef who grills the eel. We can take a look around. There is one table in front of the shop and a few more inside. The second floor has several tables and is a bit more spacious.
Ordering food is quite simple. The restaurant will provide you with a paper menu like this one. You can compare the prices and pictures to decide what you want to eat. As you can see, the prices range from 500 yen to 2,000 yen per dish.
Once we've made our selection, we can tap on the iPad-like device at our table to place our order. The device displays an English menu with prices and pictures, making it easy to navigate. Simply tap on the desired category, select the items you want, enter the quantity, and press "Order." When you're finished eating, tap on the device to request the bill and then head to the counter on the first floor to settle your payment.
When we press the check-out button, we can choose whether to calculate the total amount or split it by person. This is very convenient for many situations.
Okay, let's take a look at the items I ordered that day. There were 6 of us in total, and we ordered 3-4 different dishes. Let's start with the cheapest dish, which was 500 yen. It came in a round bowl like the one in the picture, with one piece of unagi (eel). The size wasn't very big, but for a small woman who doesn't eat much, this bowl would probably be enough to fill her up.
The second dish is Unagi Don + Onsen Egg. This menu has a few more options, including an onsen egg and sprinkled vegetables. As far as I can tell, the unagi is a bit more than the 500 yen dish, but it comes in the form of many small pieces instead. This dish is also considered to be good value for money, as it only costs around 256 baht when converted to Thai currency.
Oh, I forgot to mention that the food price I quoted does not include the 8% VAT that will be added at the time of payment. So, this dish will actually cost around 280 baht.
The third dish, which was mine, cost 1,300 yen, or about 450 baht (including 8% VAT). The amount of eel I received was huge, with two very long pieces. The overall taste of the eel in all three dishes was excellent, fragrant, and delicious, according to both me and my companions.
Dish 4: Umaki, sweet egg with eel filling. This dish costs 500 yen. I saw the shop recommend this menu, so I ordered it. I got a total of 6 pieces. The sweet egg was delicious, but the amount of eel was a bit small. When I ate it, the sweet egg flavor overwhelmed it, so I could hardly taste the eel. T_T
Summary:
For those who love eel, I highly recommend trying this restaurant. The price is reasonable and not expensive compared to the taste and quantity you get. Compared to Thailand, it's considerably cheaper and much more delicious. Most importantly, there's no long queue, ordering is easy, and there are comfortable tables. They're open late, so even if you shop at Ameyoko Market until it closes, you can still walk over to this restaurant to refuel comfortably.
And that's it for this review. Stay tuned for more reviews of other restaurants, if I don't get lazy first... haha.
