Hello everyone, today I, "Mr. Wife Finds, Husband Uses," am back with another restaurant review. This time, I'm taking you to a casual eatery where you can enjoy a satisfying one-plate meal. Of course, if you're feeling particularly hungry, feel free to order multiple dishes! <br />
The restaurant I'm taking you to this time is "Elvis Suki" in Soi Yot Se. Getting there by car can be a bit confusing and difficult, as the area is full of one-way streets. Here are the directions for those driving: If you're coming from Rama I Road, pass MBK Center and Lotus Rama I, and you'll come to the Yot Se Bridge. After crossing the Yot Se Bridge, turn left towards Thepsirin School. Before reaching Thepsirin School, you'll see Kasikorn Thai Bank on your right. Turn right into the alley next to Kasikorn Thai Bank. (Here's a tip: After crossing the Yot Se Bridge, don't stay in the leftmost lane, as you'll need to turn right into the alley immediately after turning left. If you're in the leftmost lane, you might not be able to make the right turn in time.)
After entering Soi Yot Se, look for parking along the road. You will see people who can help you find a spot. Ask them where to park for suki, and they will direct you to a parking area for a fee of 20 baht per car. Once parked, walk towards Plap Phla Chai Road. You will find the restaurant on your left with the following appearance.
The Elvis Suki restaurant is a small, single-unit establishment with a display of fresh seafood and the chefs preparing dishes at the front. The seating area is divided into two sections: the first, pictured above, has 4-5 small tables and is somewhat cramped. The second section, located across the street, has around 10 tables, divided between an air-conditioned room and an outdoor area. Today, my wife and I sat at the outdoor tables opposite the restaurant.
The menu here spans 5-6 pages, categorized into sukiyaki, stir-fried noodles with chicken, single-dish meals, seafood, snacks, desserts, and beverages. Overall, the food prices are slightly higher than those of street-side single-dish restaurants, falling within the same range as non-premium air-conditioned restaurants.
For my menu today, I have prepared the following:
• Sukij Mhee-tr (Mixed) Soup (80 Baht)
• Pig's head (100 baht)
• Grilled squid (220 baht)
Grilled squid is priced by weight, and I've seen some large ones that cost as much as 300 baht each.
The first dish to arrive was the mixed sukiyaki, which was a generous portion for the 80 baht price. The bowl contained one shrimp and one piece of crispy squid, along with a small amount of mushrooms. There was a larger amount of pork and beef. As always, the taste was delicious and to my liking. The pork and beef were tender. ^^
The next dish was the "Too La Hua Moo," which is essentially a dry sukiyaki without noodles. It consisted only of vegetables and pork. The overall taste was decent and suitable for those who want to avoid carbohydrates. However, I personally felt that the portion of pork was a bit small, and compared to the first sukiyaki dish, it seemed less worthwhile.
The final dish, grilled squid, takes a bit longer to prepare. The price is clearly displayed on the plate to avoid any confusion during billing.
The size of the squid is quite large and worth the price. In terms of freshness, it is considered good and passes the test. This is a menu that I never miss ordering whenever I visit this restaurant. Sometimes, I even order it to take home. Oh, there are two types of dipping sauces: one is a spicy seafood sauce, and the other is a sweet sauce similar to the one served with shredded squid.
After finishing the grilled squid, I proceeded to pay the bill. The total cost for the meal was 414 baht, which included 400 baht for the food and 14 baht for water and ice. However, since I had come all the way to Elvis Suki, I felt that it would be a shame to leave without trying their dessert. Therefore, after finishing the savory dishes, we decided to indulge in their "hot pot ice cream." But before we move on to the dessert, let's summarize our experience at Elvis Suki.
Date of consumption: Saturday, May 6, 2017
Time : 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Number: 2 people
**Taste of food:** The food is delicious and passes the test. The sukiyaki and grilled squid are especially good, and I always order them whenever I come here.
Food Variety: The variety is quite good. In addition to sukiyaki, stir-fried chicken noodles, and single-dish meals, there are also many seafood dishes to choose from.
Shop Cleanliness: Due to the shop's location being rather cramped and situated right next to the road, it must be acknowledged that cleanliness may not be impeccable or excellent. However, compared to the standards of typical street food vendors, it is considered acceptable. The shop does make an effort to maintain cleanliness to a reasonable standard.
Service: The service was fast, probably because there were many staff members. Even though the restaurant was full, I didn't feel like the service was slow at all.
Accessibility: The location is not very convenient for drivers, as there are many one-way streets and parking is difficult to find, especially for first-time visitors. However, if you have been there before, it should be easier to navigate. For those who do not want to drive, there are some buses that pass by. However, in my opinion, the most convenient way to get there is by tuk-tuk or taxi.
Value for money: This might need to be broken down item by item. I think the sukiyaki is reasonably priced considering the taste, quantity, and price. However, I felt that the "Toot-Hoon-Moo" (grilled pork) had a bit too little pork. If they could add a bit more, it would be perfect. T___T As for the grilled squid, it was great! The pieces were big, satisfying, and worth the price.
Summary: If you enjoy sukiyaki, grilled seafood, and are open to street food, this restaurant is worth a try if you happen to be in the area. However, if you don't feel comfortable with the ambiance upon arrival, there are many other appealing restaurants nearby that you can choose from.
Let's move on to the ice cream shop.
The Yod Sae ice cream shop is also a single-unit space, located just a few steps away from where I was enjoying my sukiyaki. This shop offers homemade ice cream in a variety of flavors, with some unique options like "Super Milk," "Yakult Pipo," "Red Bull Vodka," and "Beer." If you're unsure which flavor to choose, the staff can provide recommendations and even let you sample a few before making your decision.
The price of ice cream ranges from 30, 35, and 40 baht per scoop. Customers can order individual scoops in separate cups or combine them into a single cup. Notably, the shop's highlight is the option to order seven or more scoops, which are presented in an impressive hot pot. This unique presentation makes for a visually appealing and photogenic experience.
Note: The image of the ice cream hotpot below is saved from the internet, as I did not take it myself. We were two people that day, and we couldn't finish 7 scoops of ice cream.
The ice cream flavors I enjoyed today were Yakult Pipo, Red Bull Vodka, and Green Tea. All three flavors were delicious and passed the taste test for both my wife and me. Yakult Pipo is my personal favorite, while Red Bull Vodka is my wife's go-to choice. The latter tastes exactly as its name suggests. To simplify the flavor profile, it's akin to a Red Bull Vodka cocktail but in ice cream form. The Green Tea flavor was rich and bold without being overly bitter.
The ice cream melts slowly, preventing the flavors from mixing and eliminating the need to rush consumption.
